Lorries by virtue of their great size and weight damage our environment most of all. They produce noise, pollution, vibration and damage to buildings close by and pose the risk of great damage to life and property in the event of an accident.
Their size has increased over the years and the prospect of those 60-tonne 'monster' trucks trundling through Hilton is frightening.
The night-time 7.5 tonne restriction has helped Potton Road residents get some sleep, but those lorry drivers who do flout the B1040 night time ban still cause great disturbance.
There have also been instances of lorries contravening the 24 hour ban on Graveley Way and across The Green.
We acknowledge the assistance of CCC Trading Standards in supporting the establishment of LorryWatch programme in Hilton, but we are not optimistic that there will be prosecutions and damaging penalties that remove the problem, particularly for lorry drivers using B1040 at night.
Speed
Villagers observe that many vehicles are consistently and frequently exceeding the 30 mph speed limits, with no consequences to the drivers. Police enforcement is rare and speed checks are not set up at north and south of village where speed tends to be greatest.
Sheer volume of vehicles
Traffic volumes have increased greatly over the years and this trend must surely continue in future as economic (and in particular housing) development in this region continues apace. Large numbers of cars commute through Hilton early morning and late afternoon.
The effects on Hilton of the A14 improvement project and a possible new junction at Wood Green are not yet understood.
