HILTON CRICKET CLUB
Last month’s Spectrum went to press just as our lads were undergoing mental preparations for the final match of the season. The whites were fading, the protective underwear had developed that slightly offensive end-of-season fragrance and the course of anabolic steroids had reached the final dose as eleven world-weary bodies dragged themselves on to the field of play for the last time. Our opponents were Waresley III, a development side. Our batsmen got stuck in and Tony, Tuddy, Mark, Chris and Adi all scored lots, leaving the scoreboard operator exhausted after chalking up 256 runs. The bowlers were just as successful, with Adi leading the charge with 4-31. It only got better, as Mark appointed Tom White and Richard Ruddy as executioners. Tom took the wickets of two big hitters in the middle order, while Richard was inspired, capturing three wickets for no runs in just nine balls. The sweetest moment was when Waresley’s skipper went into bat after his batsmen had queued up to throw their wickets away. "Just watch what I do", he instructed modestly. A few seconds later, he was trudging back, having been bowled by a Jaffa from Richard, which the batsman insisted had defied the laws of physics. Maximum points to Hilton to round off an unusual season.
In the final rankings, Hilton came third in the division. We had lost only three games, two of them to Alconbury II, who were penalised during the season for fielding a few Test players.
