Great Staughton AwayWhen the history of the Wisden Wars comes to be written, Hilton’s part in the Huntingdonshire Campaign will feature strongly. Take, for example, the Battle of Great Staughton. Both armies marched on to the field on 21st May and scrapped for about 90 minutes until someone shouted “Rain!” and everyone ran for cover in case their baldrics became soggy. Hilton decamped, took a week’s leave and mustered at Sawtry the following Sunday. Hilton’s battery performed moderately well, scoring 123 hits. Mark put up strong resistance for 27 and Tuddy hit 18, but the only survivor was Stubbington the Elder with 19 not out. The second wave of Hilton’s attack destroyed Sawtry’s soft underbelly, with Tuddy taking 4 for 15. Victory to Hilton. Scoreboard:Hilton 123 all out. Sawtry II 107 all out (Frost 4-15). Hilton won by 16 runs.
